Re: starting up on your own?
Read this first.
Sometimes, old friends, ex-colleagues and even new people or students I meet on my journey ask for my point of view on starting up a product, integrated marketing, digital, design or creative + creative technology team and I am just leaving this here incase it helps others as well.
One thing that people rarely talk about in the collective consciouness, is about how external forces, affect the internal functioning of a vertical, a department, a team, an organization, an overarching brand owning the organization and even its direct and indirect competition. Which directly affects the reason your company exists. These days, a lot of people have started writing about this as well.
You can call them different names, various terms, identify them as trends, market forces, dynamics of consumption, macro-economic forces, industrial changes and almost everything around you forms the context. Whether you accept it, acknowledge it or not, these variables are constantly fighting your team in the shadows. So, when you are unprepared, things change overnight.
So, do a thorough study, hire someone to help you before you start anything today.
And, beyond all this, it’s very important to have good human beings as partners, creative and community continuity, follow rules of all kinds and do the hard thing which is doing things right.
It will take time as the compounding value of something done intentionally well can’t be seen immediately but all big things have small beginnings.
