A taxonomy of AI showing relationships between AI, ML, CS, DS and DL.
An exercise from one of my courses.
I’m currently taking 3 fun and interesting courses by the University of Helsinki and MinnaLearn. One of the exercises we had to do was creating a taxonomy of AI with a Euler Diagram showing relationships between AI, ML, CS, DS and DL.
Euler Diagrams are closely related to Venn Diagrams. Taxonomies are schemes that allow you to classify several connected or seemingly unconnected things that may be special cases of each other. Euler Diagrams consist of shapes that correspond to concepts that are organized and in the process overlaps between shapes correspond to overlaps between concepts.
In this taxonomy, we can clearly see that:
AI in part B is a part of Computer Science
Machine Learning in part C is usually considered to be a part of AI
Computer Science in part A is relatively broad and includes AI but also other subfields such as Distributed Computing, Human- Computer Interaction and Software Engineering
Data Science in part E needs Computer Science and AI. It also involves tons of Statistics, Business Law and other Application Domains, so it is generally not considered to be a part of Computer Science
Deep Learning in part D is a part of Machine Learning
Well I hope today’s blog post and entry helped you learn more about relationships between AI, ML, CS, DS and DL just like I did while doing this assignment and also -recreating the Euler Diagram.

This blog post is not commercial and my personal love of the courses are not an official endorsement. However, I love learning new things from time to time especially in a free and amazing course by The University of Helsinki - the oldest and largest institution of academic education in Finland. Through the power of science, the University has contributed to society, education and welfare since 1640 and MinnaLearn their course collaborator and partner.
